When Two Worlds Collide
93 mins | Peru | 2016
Directed by Heidi Brandenburg & Mathew Orzel
Winner of a World Cinema documentary competition prize at Sundance, When Two Worlds Collide offers a vivid depiction of the clash between indigenous Peruvian minorities and corporate government interests.
That conflict flared into contentious, highly publicized strikes and violence in 2009, which are depicted here in alarmingly immediate on-the-ground footage shot by participants on both sides. In its detailed and balanced study, When Two Worlds Collide is at times harrowing and brutal, but ultimately settles in a place that is both heartfelt and inspiring. A definite highlight of the 2017 program.
